Tim Macer to speak to MRS Golden Jubilee Conference

1 December 2006

A ground-breaking application for 'intelligent' processing of open-ended answers to surveys in use at online bank Egg to be presented by the trio who were instrumental in developing it: Mark Pearson, one of the founders of Egg, Dr Fabrizio Sebastiani from the Italian National Council for Research, and Tim Macer from meaning, who managed the project.

The paper is entitled "Cracking the Code: what customers say in their own words" and will examine how machine learning-based text classification technology has been successfully applied to research survey data collected online from Egg's three million customers. This is a trainable system which mirrors the typical activity of a human coder -- until you decide there are sufficient training examples to be able to 'push go' and let the system take over. The system will then code responses at a rate of thousands per second with very similar levels of accuracy to human coders - reducing weeks of work to a few minutes. In fact, the more accurate the coders when training, the more accurate the automated coding.
